About Gauhati High Court
Gauhati High Court was officially known as High Court of Assam and Nagaland, but in the year 1971 by the North East Areas Reorganization Act 1971, it was renamed as Gauhati High Court. Covering the States of Assam, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, the Gauhati High Court has the largest jurisdiction in terms of state.
The Assam Legislative Assembly has accepted a resolution that a High court will be started for the region of Assam in the year 9th September 1947. The seat of theHigh court is at Guwahati which is at Assam. Apart from the seat, the High Court of Gauhati has 3 benches. For the state of Arunachal Pradesh the bench is at Itanagar which was established on 12th August 2000, for the state of Nagaland the bench is at Kohima which was established on 1st December 1972 and for the state of Mizoram the bench is at Aizawl which was established on 5th July 1990.Till March 23rd 2013, the high court of the seven states of North East India was unique which was occupying by the Gauhati High Court, but the high court in Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura it started to work as a separate High Court from 23.3.2013.
Currently the Gauhati High Court has the sanctioned strength of 24 Judges it also includes Hon’ble Chief Justice and 5 additional Judges. President of India is hiring the Chief Justice and the Judges by warrant under his hand and seal. Permanent Judges can continue in office till the age of 62 years.
